Kathmandu: Minister of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, announced that a separate Act on renewable energy and energy efficiency will be established.
Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu on Thursday, Minister Khadka emphasized the government’s commitment to achieving its clean energy transformation goals. He informed the audience that the bill on renewable energy and energy efficiency has already been passed by the National Assembly and is currently under discussion in the House of Representatives.
The Minister stated that he has prioritized ensuring the bill is passed by the House of Representatives as soon as possible, so it can become law. He expressed confidence that the new Act would play a key role in transforming the Alternative Energy Promotion Center into a leading organization in the field of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and energy transformation, while establishing a strong legal foundation for its expanded role.
Minister Khadka further highlighted that the government has prioritized the expansion of renewable energy and energy efficiency through its policy, strategy, and objectives. He pointed out that the recently approved Energy Development Roadmap and Working Guideline, 2081, gives high priority to the transformation of renewable energy into efficient and clean energy, in line with Nepal’s international commitments and national climate change goals.
The approved roadmap aims to increase the country’s installed capacity to 28,500 megawatts by 2035 and boost per capita electricity consumption to 1,500 units per year. Additionally, the roadmap targets providing electricity to 100 percent of households within the next two years, using off-grid solar, wind, and small hydropower to serve areas not connected to the national grid.
