Jagat Bahadur Simkhada elected as President of Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre

Kathmandu– Jagat Bahadur Simkhada has been elected as the President of the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre (JTUC).

During the 6th National Trade Union Conference held in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Simkhada was elected as the National President of JTUC for a one-year term. Indra Dev Mishra was elected as Secretary General, Sita Lama as Women’s Coordinator, and Sarita Ghising as Secretary of the Women’s Committee.

Currently, there are 10 Trade Union Federations affiliated with JTUC. Each year, a different trade union organization represents the presidency of JTUC, which is held every other year. The newly elected President, Simkhada, stated that he views becoming President of JTUC as a challenge.

He added that Nepal’s trade movement is in a critical situation. Despite addressing labor issues in the constitution, he noted that no laws have been formed to improve labor conditions. Chairman Simkhada emphasized that efforts would be made to bring Nepal’s trade union movement, which has started to move in the opposite direction, back on track.

He also stated that he would initiate efforts to amend the anti-labor clauses in the Labor Act. Furthermore, he pointed out that the next challenge would be to implement contribution-based social security.
