Market Monitoring Undermined by Businessmen’s Disputes: Director General Poudel



Kathmandu. Director General of Department of Commerce Supplies and Consumer Protection Rajan Poudel said that businessmen’s mutual accusations have caused problems in market monitoring.

Speaking at the interaction program organized by Kathmandu Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the topic market monitoring, General Director Poudel said that monitoring have been affected recently, due to mutual accusation, water supplier accusing dairy supplier and vice versa, as well as water supplier accusing cement supplier and other entreprenuer.

He said, “one businessmen accusing another businessmen have created confusion for the department regarding whom to take action and whom to monitor. He added, this have affected the whole system of monitoring and stable market.”

He told, this accusations and counter-accusations have affected the market, weakening regulatory bodies. He said during Dashain- Tihar total 40 farms were monitored, but action against only 2-3 farms were taken. However, it is claimed that department had no intention of taking any kind of action against the businessmen.

Chairman of Kathmandu Chamber of Commerce and Industry said private sector is not found negative about the regulation during Governmental monitoring. He said, it is essential for the Government to carry out legal proceeding, taking into consideration the investment done by private sectors during the difficult times. He said, if government takes action that drowns the investment, it will lead to fleeing of the businessmen leaving Industries and business.

He said, in order to make market monitoring effective, Government must gaurantee that market monitoring won’t lead to unnatural increase in the price. Rather, market monitoring should also create a situation where consumer are sure that there is no prouduct with expiry date in the market.
