Kathmandu. The government has announced a hike in the support price of sugarcane by Rs 20 per quintal, following a decision made during the Council of Ministers’ meeting on Thursday. With this revision, sugarcane farmers are now entitled to receive Rs 585 per quintal from sugar mills.
Agriculture and Livestock Development Minister Ramnath Adhikari had recommended an increase in the grant provided to farmers in addition to the revised support price. However, citing the current economic conditions, the Council of Ministers has decided to defer the decision on the grant amount.
Previously, the government had been providing farmers with a grant of Rs 70 per quintal, but any potential adjustment to this amount will be finalized in due course.
The move to increase the sugarcane support price is expected to provide some relief to farmers, though the delay in finalizing the grant amount has left them waiting for additional financial support.
