Nepal Returning to Normal After Gen Z Protests: Public Transport Resumes, Citizens Back to Work, New Prime Minister Assumes Office

Kathmandu – Public life across Nepal is gradually returning to normal following weeks of violent Gen Z-led protests and the nationwide curfews and prohibitory orders that followed. With restrictions now lifted, citizens in the Kathmandu Valley and other cities have resumed their daily work.

Public transport, which had partially resumed on Saturday, came into full operation from Sunday. Initially limited to the Ring Road, services have now expanded to inner city routes and areas outside the Valley, easing mobility for commuters who had faced severe travel disruptions. Alongside public vehicles, hotels, grocery stores, and government offices are also reopening, signaling a steady return to routine life.

Fallout of the Gen Z Movement

  • The protests erupted against corruption, political elitism, lavish lifestyles of leaders, and social media bans.
  • At least 51 people have been confirmed dead, including 21 protesters, 9 prisoners, 3 police officers, and 18 others.
  • Of the fatalities, 30 died from gunshot wounds, while 21 died from burns, injuries, or other causes.
  • Among the deceased is one Indian national.
  • More than 1,300 people have been injured during the unrest.

New Government in Action

Amid the transition, newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki has formally assumed office and begun her regular duties. According to officials, preparations are underway to expand the Council of Ministers later today.

Authorities maintain that the situation is now under control. The resumption of public transport, reopening of government services, and the active engagement of the new government are expected to restore public confidence and boost economic activities nationwide.
