Kathmandu-
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on Saturday, where the two leaders pledged to take Nepal–China relations to new heights through enhanced cooperation in diverse sectors.
During the talks, Prime Minister Oli expressed gratitude for China’s continued support in Nepal’s development efforts.
He noted that Nepal–China relations, based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, have remained trouble-free. Extending his best wishes for the success of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, Oli requested China’s support for Nepal’s aspiration to become a member of the SCO.
Calling for expedited implementation of projects already agreed under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Prime Minister sought China’s assistance in key areas such as fertilizer supply, petroleum exploration, human resources development, climate resilience, and people-to-people connectivity.
Referring to the recent understanding between India and China on border trade through the Lipu Lekh Pass, Oli reiterated that the territory belongs to Nepal and stressed that the Government of Nepal has strongly objected to the arrangement.
President Xi, for his part, expressed China’s readiness to support Nepal in achieving its vision of a “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.” He also assured cooperation in multilateral forums including the UN and SCO. Xi thanked Nepal for its firm adherence to the One China Policy and reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s development through the implementation of high-quality BRI projects.
Prime Minister Oli arrived in Tianjin this afternoon, where he was warmly welcomed at the Binhai International Airport by senior Chinese officials and Nepal’s Ambassador to China, Dr. Krishna Prasad Oli.
He is scheduled to meet other world leaders on the sidelines of the SCO Summit and attend a welcome banquet and cultural gala hosted by President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan on Sunday.
