How Healthy Are Nepal’s Banks?



Kathmandu – Commercial banks in Nepal are actively publishing their fourth-quarter financial reports for the fiscal year 2081/82, revealing that most banks have posted improved performance.

So far, Everest Bank, Nabil Bank, Machhapuchchhre Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, and several others have released their audited results.

The figures show that the majority of these banks have increased profits, boosted interest income, and in some cases reduced the proportion of non-performing loans (NPL).

Everest Bank reported a net profit of NPR 4.9181 billion as of Ashad-end 2082, up 32.80% compared to NPR 3.7032 billion in the same period last year. The bank’s net interest income rose 19.36% to NPR 9.1293 billion from NPR 7.6483 billion.

Deposits surged 38.62% to NPR 298.8184 billion, while loans grew 19.86% to NPR 213.6235 billion. Operating profit reached NPR 7.4542 billion, a 31.63% rise from NPR 5.6630 billion last year. Its NPL ratio declined to 0.38% from 0.71%, contributing significantly to profit growth.

NMB Bank also posted higher profits, recording NPR 3.28 billion in net profit compared to NPR 2.24 billion last year.

Distributable profit stood at NPR 1.90 billion, with distributable earnings per share (EPS) of NPR 10.41 and a net worth per share of NPR 180. However, its NPL ratio rose slightly to 3.72% from 3.40%.

Nabil Bank’s net profit climbed 15% to NPR 7.12 billion from NPR 6.19 billion last year. Annual EPS was NPR 26.34, while distributable profit reached NPR 4.77 billion. NPL improved slightly to 4.27% from 4.45%, and the bank’s net worth per share stood at NPR 235.

Himalayan Bank posted a net profit of NPR 1.51 billion, up 22.15% from NPR 1.23 billion, though its NPL ratio rose to 7.28% from 4.98%.

Machhapuchchhre Bank achieved an impressive 92.45% surge in net profit to NPR 2.01 billion. Its net interest income grew 15.41% to NPR 5.75 billion, and EPS reached NPR 17.31.

Kumari Bank reported a net profit of NPR 2.11 billion — nearly 400 times higher than last year. Net interest income rose by around 7% to NPR 11.55 billion. EPS stood at NPR 8.06.

Siddhartha Bank’s distributable profit tripled to NPR 1.86 billion. The bank plans to distribute a 13.22% dividend. Net interest income increased 6.43% to NPR 8.44 billion, with EPS at NPR 24.01.

The state-owned Agricultural Development Bank posted a net profit of NPR 4.15 billion, up 44%, though its net interest income fell by 7% to NPR 9.82 billion. EPS reached NPR 27.06.

Sanima Bank reported a 7.25% increase in net profit to NPR 2.5711 billion. Distributable profit stood at NPR 2.7807 billion, enabling a potential dividend capacity of 20.47% (up from 10.66%). However, NPL rose to 1.21% from 0.51%.

Citizens Bank saw its net profit fall 2% to NPR 1.29 billion, although net interest income grew by nearly 12% to NPR 6.36 billion. EPS was NPR 8.76.

More banks are expected to publish their annual results in the coming days.
