Making Structures Earthquake-Resistant is the Need of the Hour: Deputy Minister



Kathmandu – Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakash Man Singh stated that following the National Building Code is essential to minimize the loss of lives and property due to earthquakes.

Addressing an event organized on Monday to mark the 27th Earthquake Safety Day, Minister Singh highlighted that Nepal is prone to various disasters, including floods, landslides, fires, earthquakes, and epidemics.

He added that, in recent times, the country has been constantly impacted by disastrous incidents. Ensuring safety from such events requires significant improvements in preparedness, as well as in search and rescue operations. Minister Singh also emphasized that, taking lessons from the past, constructing earthquake-resistant houses and buildings is critical.

Minister Singh said, “Our country has been continuously affected by numerous disasters in recent times, including floods, landslides, epidemics, fires, and earthquakes. To minimize the loss of lives and property, it is essential to follow the National Building Code.”

Minister Singh said that it is equally necessary to spread public awareness regarding risk reduction and the safe construction of buildings and other physical structures. He further emphasized the effective implementation of construction-related laws, necessary changes to ease complicated policies, as well as new projects and policy formulation.

Minister Singh stated that since natural disasters know no boundaries, coordination and support are crucial.
