World Social Forum 2024 Kicks Off in Kathmandu with Record-Breaking Participation

Kathmandu Welcomes World Social Forum 2024: 50K Attendees, 98 Nations Represented

Kathmandu,

The vibrant streets of Kathmandu witnessed a historic gathering as the 16th edition of the World Social Forum (WSF) 2024 commenced with a massive solidarity march, showcasing the diversity and unity of participants from around the globe. Waves of people, adorned in traditional attire, indigenous clothing, workwear, casuals, and suits, joined hands with a resounding cry of “Another World Is Possible,” marking the beginning of this monumental event.

Originating from civil society movements against globalization in the late 1990s, the World Social Forum held its first assembly in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 2001. Fast forward to 2024, Nepal proudly assumed the role of host country after a rigorous selection process conducted by the International Council (IC) and the Asia-Pacific Social Forum (APSF).

In March 2023, the IC designated Nepal and its capital, Kathmandu, as the hosts, prompting the mobilization of a dedicated general council, organizing committee, and various subcommittees. With volunteers working tirelessly, preparations for WSF 2024 were meticulously planned, including the selection of Bhrikuti Mandap as the venue and the launch of the WSF website.

Careful planning and mass mobilization efforts culminated in the registration of over 50,000 participants representing 98 nations and more than 1,400 organizations from six continents. The Intercontinental Youth Forum, with 410 participants from over 30 nations, ran concurrently with the main event, featuring over 400 activities under thirteen thematic areas.

The grand opening ceremony, held on February 15th, saw Bhrikuti Mandap brimming with hope, inspiration, and solidarity as attendees from diverse backgrounds convened to address pressing global issues. Today’s Square of Statements witnessed over 60 declarations from organizations worldwide, reaffirming their commitment to building a fairer and more just world.

The success of WSF 2024 owes much to the collaborative efforts of various social movements, institutions, organizations, and individuals. The organizers expressed their gratitude to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his support, as well as to all distinguished speakers and stakeholders involved.

WSF 2024 received immense support from local institutions, including Ratna Rajya Campus, Nepal Law Campus, and Balmiki Campus of Tribhuvan University, as well as governmental bodies such as the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Nepal Tourism Board. The event also received generous contributions from individuals like Mr. Pushpa Lal Shrestha, who provided drinking water free of cost.

Acknowledgments were extended to security forces, volunteers, NGO federations, and medical support providers for their invaluable contributions to the successful operation of WSF 2024. The event’s international council members, Asia Pacific Facilitation committee, NOC subcommittee members, and media personnel were also thanked for their continuous support and collaborative efforts.

As WSF 2024 draws to a close, participants depart with a renewed sense of purpose, carrying with them the spirit of solidarity and a commitment to effecting positive change in their communities and beyond. The organizers extend their gratitude to all who contributed to making this event a resounding success and invite everyone to be a part of the World Social Forum’s history and legacy.
