econd Phewa Dialogue Concludes in Chengdu, Strengthening China–South Asia Cooperation

Chengdu—

The Second Phewa Dialogue concluded successfully in Chengdu, China, on March 27, marking a significant step forward in promoting academic collaboration and regional cooperation between China and South Asia.

The two-day event, held from March 26–27, was jointly organized by the China Center for South Asia Studies (CCSAS) at Sichuan University and Tribhuvan University, Nepal. It brought together prominent scholars, policy experts, and representatives from think tanks across China, South Asia, and neighboring regions.

The Phewa Dialogue serves as a leading academic platform for discussing key regional and global issues. This year’s theme, “South Asian Development under Climate Change and Governance,” focused on addressing growing climate challenges and exploring sustainable development strategies.

Participants engaged in high-level discussions, panel sessions, and expert exchanges, emphasizing the need for stronger regional cooperation and innovative solutions to tackle climate-related risks. Key areas of discussion included governance strategies for climate adaptation and mitigation, regional economic integration, promotion of green energy, and sustainable development practices.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing climate change. He noted that cooperation between China and Nepal has strengthened over time and that China’s green transition is creating new development opportunities for South Asian countries.

Similarly, Sichuan University Vice President Prof. Liu Chao emphasized the long-standing academic partnership between Sichuan University and Tribhuvan University. He shared that more than 400 South Asian students, including over 100 from Nepal, have studied at the university under various international programs.

Tribhuvan University Rector Prof. Khadga KC expressed confidence that the dialogue would enhance regional connectivity and deepen mutual understanding among South Asian countries and China at the academic and policy levels.

The 2026 edition builds upon the success of the first Phewa Dialogue held in Pokhara, Nepal, in December 2024. With its growing relevance, the platform is expected to continue fostering meaningful dialogue, strengthening partnerships, and contributing to solutions for global challenges.
