Kathmandu— The Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) officially announced the ninth edition of its flagship event, Power Summit 2025, scheduled for September 17–18, 2025, in Kathmandu. The announcement came during a press conference held on Thursday, where IPPAN leadership highlighted the strategic significance of the summit.
Themed “Mission 28,500 MW: Powering Nepal, Energizing Region,” the summit envisions establishing Nepal as a regional powerhouse for clean energy. Ganesh Karki, President of IPPAN, emphasized that Power Summit 2025 will be a landmark event in shaping the future of Nepal’s energy sector.
This international-level event is being organized in alignment with the Government of Nepal’s advanced Energy Development Roadmap-2081, which aims to generate an additional 25,000 megawatts of electricity within the next decade. The summit will be held under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation of Nepal, with India participating as the Country Partner through its Embassy in Nepal, alongside multiple national and international organizations, agencies, and companies.
Highlighting the private sector’s pivotal role in the country’s energy development, IPPAN President Karki stated, “Since the introduction of the Electricity Act 1992 (2049 B.S.), the private sector has contributed over 80% of Nepal’s total energy production.” Following the establishment of multiparty democracy, private investors have installed an impressive 2,900 MW out of the current 3,602 MW total capacity.
The favorable investment policies enacted by the government have helped mobilize over NPR 1,300 billion in investments, with plans to attract up to NPR 5,000 billion in the coming years. While Nepal took 114 years to generate 3,600 MW since the first power plant’s development, the government now targets an ambitious 28,500 MW by 2035—a goal IPPAN believes can only be achieved through active private sector participation.
Power Summit 2025 is expected to host over 1,000 participants from 30 countries, including senior government officials, diplomats, international experts, investors, financial institutions, development agencies, and private sector representatives.
Following the success of previous summits held in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2023, this year’s event aims to strengthen Nepal’s position in the international energy community. It will offer actionable recommendations on achieving net-zero goals, enhancing domestic energy infrastructure, and advancing regional market integration.
Ananda Chaudhary, Vice-President and Coordinator of the Power Summit Main Event Committee, stated, “The summit will feature high-level dignitaries, including the Prime Minister of Nepal, international experts, and key stakeholders, who will engage in policy debates, share success stories, and address infrastructure challenges, climate change impacts, disaster risk reduction, and energy consumption patterns in the region.”
The summit also intends to highlight Nepal’s status as a green energy developing country by addressing regional and global concerns, such as implementing the Energy Roadmap, promoting green and clean energy availability, facilitating electricity and carbon trading, innovating financial instruments, ensuring energy security, and expanding regional connectivity through cross-border infrastructure.
By providing a platform for sharing experiences and best practices from various countries and development partners, Power Summit 2025 seeks to contribute significantly to effective policy-making for Nepal and the wider South Asian region.
