Kathmandu- President of the Independent Power Producers’ Association of Nepal (IPPAN), Ganesh Karki, accused the government of moving ahead with policies aimed at destroying the private sector.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, IPPAN alleged that the government has introduced a budget for the energy sector that would permanently damage Nepal’s energy industry and wipe out the private sector.
President Karki said that the budget neither addresses consumption nor touches on the terms of electricity sales. He mentioned that the government appears to be heading towards declaring that there is sufficient electricity and no more is needed. He also accused the government of closing the doors on the private sector.
Karki further stated that in the future, Nepal may no longer sell electricity generated by its own producers, as large Indian companies would be brought in to generate the required power and export it themselves.
He added that despite the government’s repeated assurances to include the private sector in electricity trade, this commitment has lacked practical implementation.
