Kathmandu– Today, June 5, is World Environment Day, a global movement dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues. It is observed every year to encourage people around the world to take action to protect the planet.
World Environment Day was established in 1972 during the United Nations Conference in Stockholm. The United Nations officially designated June 5 as World Environment Day, and the first celebration was held in 1973 under the theme “Only One Earth.”
Each year, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) selects a host country and announces a theme. This year, the host country is the Republic of Korea, and the theme is “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution.” As part of the campaign, various awareness programs and events are being held to highlight the harmful impact of plastic waste on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.
Over 150 countries participate in this global movement, including Nepal. On this occasion, various awareness activities and campaigns are being organized throughout the country. Schools, colleges, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations are actively involved in raising awareness about pressing environmental issues. Activities include clean-up drives, tree plantation programs, rallies, and policy discussions related to the environment.
Plastic pollution remains a serious issue in Nepal. Every day, large amounts of non-degradable plastic waste are generated. Much of this waste is dumped in rivers or open areas, causing harm to the environment and public health.
Although the government has banned single-use plastics below 40 microns, the implementation has been weak, and plastic pollution continues to grow. Both government authorities and individuals need to take stronger action to address this issue and protect the environment for future generations.
