Private Sector Capable of Generating 28,500 MW, but Needs Policy Support: President Karki

Kathmandu . Ganesh Karki, President of the Independent Power Producers’ Association, stated that the private sector is capable of handling projects generating up to 28,500 megawatts of electricity, but policy support is crucial.

Speaking at a program organized by the Nepal Association of Financial Journalists (NAFIJ) on Tuesday, titled Hydropower Projects: Investment, Share Management, and Challenges, President Karki emphasized that while the private sector has the capacity to generate this amount of electricity, supportive government policies are essential.

He also pointed out that the private sector is capable of handling large-scale projects, but international investment is necessary for major undertakings. President Karki further noted that the Electricity Act of 2049 has supported the private sector and expressed hope that the upcoming new Act would ease operational challenges for private companies.

He concluded by highlighting the potential of Nepal’s hydropower sector, primarily driven by domestic investment, to contribute positively to the country’s economic development. He urged policymakers and government officials to adopt a more supportive approach toward the challenges faced by the private sector.
