Kathmandu. The second edition of the Tenzing Norgay Open Climbing Competition will take place on January 29 and 30, 2025 (Magh 16 and 17).
Organized jointly by the U.S. Nepal Climbers Association (USNCA) and the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), the event commemorates the legendary climber Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and his contributions to mountaineering.
The main objective of the competition is to encourage the younger generation to engage in climbing and prepare them for international events, including the Olympics. Serap Jangbu Sherpa, the founding president and representative of the USNCA, shared that the overwhelming response to the first edition motivated them to organize the second edition with better planning.
Unlike the previous edition, where the press meet was held just days before the competition, this time, the organizers have announced the event well in advance to maximize participation. The competition will be conducted at two locations—semifinals and finals—with the venue for the qualifying rounds to be revealed soon.
Both male and female participants aged 12 years and above are eligible to compete, with a participation fee of NPR 500. The winners will receive cash prizes: NPR 45,000 for first place, NPR 35,000 for second place, and NPR 15,000 for third place.
The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association will oversee the technical aspects of the competition. The organizers have also disclosed that an official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exists between USNCA and NNMGA, ensuring that the two organizations take turns coordinating the event annually.
